Weak AI (Artificial Intelligence): Examples and Limitations

1. What is weak AI?

Weak artificial intelligence (AI), sometimes known as narrow AI, is a subset of artificial intelligence that is restricted to a specific or small domain. Weak artificial intelligence simulates human cognition. It has the ability to improve society by automating time-consuming processes and analyzing data in ways that humans cannot. Weak AI can be contrasted with strong AI, which is a theoretical kind of machine intelligence that is equivalent to human intelligence.

2. Understanding Weak AI.

Weak AI lacks human consciousness; however, it may be able to replicate it on occasion. John Searle’s Chinese room thought experiment is a classic example of poor artificial intelligence.

University of Pennsylvania, Carey School of Law. “The Chinese Room Argument.” Accessed: January 1, 2022.

According to this experiment, a person outside a room can have what appears to be a Chinese conversation with a person within a room who is given instructions on how to respond to Chinese discussions.

Narrow or weak AI systems lack universal intelligence; instead, they possess particular intelligence. An AI that is adept at advising you how to get from point A to point B is unlikely to challenge you to a game of chess. Similarly, an artificial intelligence that can pretend to speak Chinese with you is unlikely to be able to sweep your floors.

3. Applications of Weak AI.

By finding patterns and making predictions, weak AI contributes to the conversion of large amounts of data into useful knowledge.

Email spam filters are another example of poor AI; a computer employs an algorithm to determine which messages are likely to be spam and then redirects them from the inbox to the spam folder.

4. Limits of Weak AI

Aside from its restricted capabilities, one of the issues with weak AI is the potential to cause harm if a system fails. Consider a driverless car that miscalculates the location of an oncoming vehicle, resulting in a fatal collision. The technology can potentially inflict harm if it is utilized by someone who intends to cause harm; for example, a terrorist who uses a self-driving car to detonate bombs in a crowded location.

Another concern about poor AI is job loss due to the automation of a growing number of tasks. Will unemployment rise dramatically, or will society find new methods for humans to be economically productive? Although the possibility of a high number of workers losing their employment is alarming, AI advocates argue that if this occurs, new jobs will develop that we cannot yet predict as AI becomes more widely used.

2. Types of Artificial Intelligence

The goal of AI is to construct intelligent systems that can solve complicated issues, increase efficiency, and drive innovation by automating processes, analyzing massive quantities of data, and making inferences.

Disruptive technologies require time and iteration to mature into highly useful tools. AI is not new to this evolution, and it can be generally classified based on its capabilities:

1. Narrow AI (weak AI) is the most fundamental type of AI available. Narrow AI workloads are trained to do a single or limited set of tasks using predefined rules and parameters; weak AI does not include human-level reasoning.

2. General AI (strong AI) can accomplish a wide range of tasks with human-like capabilities. It is capable of reasoning, problem-solving, and adapting without being programmed for specific tasks. Training AI algorithms is a critical component of developing general AI.

3. Superintelligent AI would outperform human intelligence by having the ability to reason as well as process human-like cognitive skills. According to IBM, superintelligent AI is a hypothetical concept that has raised ethical and other concerns.

3. How Companies are Using Weak AI

Although generative AI is in the forefront right now, AI is already a part of our everyday life. It almost imperceptibly improves our efficiency and experiences. Despite its opacity, weak AI is an important and effective resource for growing businesses. In general, artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform and shape the competitive landscape while favorably impacting many elements of business.

Businesses care not only about improving their customers’ experiences but also about improving operations, saving time, and lowering expenses. Weak AI can help the firm become more agile and productive, resulting in revenue growth.

1. Voice assistants, chatbots, and conversational AI will minimize the workload of support and customer care workers.

2. Personalization and recommendation engines ensure that apps and services are brought up based on a user’s specific interests and previous digital behavior.

3. Financial reporting, accounting, and fraud detection to improve efficiency and eliminate errors in taxes, accounting, cash flow, and ledgers.

4. Predictive maintenance and analytics predict anticipated outcomes, such as whether a machine will fail or when maintenance is required.

5. Process automation involves decreasing time-consuming manual tasks that are frequently subject to human mistake, such as appointment scheduling and data entry.

6. Uptime optimization ensures the reliability of e-commerce and web services, as well as the identification of possible issues before they affect availability.

4. Weak AI Business Integration.

Most firms want to use the capabilities of AI. However, according to a Forbes Advisor study, while 97% of respondents believe the need for AI has increased in the previous six months, only 14% feel fully prepared to apply it. 4 Despite the growing benefits of AI, organizations lack the necessary infrastructure, expertise, and data to capitalize.

There are choices, including colocation in a CoreSite data center. Data centers provide vital infrastructure and an environment for power-hungry AI applications. To meet rising demand, data centers evolve by expanding space, strengthening distribution systems, and increasing energy efficiency. On-premises private data centers frequently fail to scale or provide the required data transit capacity. Furthermore, these AI-ready data centers provide an environment conducive to advanced computing.
