Early life and Career
1940 saw the birth of Dietmar Hopp in Heidelberg, Germany. After graduating from Sinsheim High School, he enlisted in the military for a year. He studied computer science at Karlsruhe University and graduated with a degree in engineering. Shortly after graduation, he met Klaus Tschira, Claus Wellenreuther, and Hasso Plattner while working as a systems consultant for IBM. The crew founded SAP in 1972 after leaving IBM. Five engineers reportedly left IBM because, among other things, the corporation rejected their proposal to begin developing financial software packages for businesses.
Business
In addition to conducting its initial public offering (IPO) in 1988, SAP started supplying computer installations to companies outside of Germany in 1977. From 1988 to 1997, Hopp served as the CEO of SAP. He was primarily in charge of the company’s product development and distribution, management, and public relations. He was the board’s chairman from 1998 to 2003 before leaving in 2005. At the moment, SAP is the world’s third-largest independent software developer and manufacturer. His son, Daniel Hopp, was born in October 1980 and is the managing director of the Dietmar-Hopp-Foundation, the golf club St. Leon Rot, the ice hockey team Adler Mannheim, and the SAP Arena in Mannheim, where events are hosted. Domaine de Terre Blanche, a golf resort in southern France, is run by his son Oliver Hopp, who was born in April 1972.

The Hopp Stiftung donates €1.5 million a year to the Heidelberg Institute for Stem Cell Technology and Experimental Medicine (HI-STEM). Medical expectations regarding stem cell research drive the commitment.
